How to Password Protect a PDF
Lock a PDF with a password before you email it — encryption runs on your device.
Quick steps
- Open Protect PDF. Go to pdfoncall.com/protect.
- Add your PDF. Drop the file you want to lock.
- Set a password. Pick a strong password. You'll need it to open the file later.
- Download. Save the encrypted PDF and send it wherever.
What protection does
The PDF is encrypted. Anyone opening it must type your password — Preview, Adobe, Chrome, all enforce it.
Choose a strong password
- At least 12 characters.
- Mix letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Send the password through a different channel than the file.
Need to remove a password?
