How to Password Protect a PDF

Lock a PDF with a password before you email it — encryption runs on your device.

Quick steps

  1. Open Protect PDF. Go to pdfoncall.com/protect.
  2. Add your PDF. Drop the file you want to lock.
  3. Set a password. Pick a strong password. You'll need it to open the file later.
  4. Download. Save the encrypted PDF and send it wherever.

What protection does

The PDF is encrypted. Anyone opening it must type your password — Preview, Adobe, Chrome, all enforce it.

Choose a strong password

  • At least 12 characters.
  • Mix letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Send the password through a different channel than the file.

Need to remove a password?

Use Unlock PDF — you'll need the current password.
