Miami ProjectDox Drawing File Naming & Plan Splitting

City of Miami (Building, Fire, Planning & Zoning, Resilience & Public Works) publishes filename rules for plans uploaded to ePlan Review / ProjectDox. Permit Prep splits your combined plan set into one PDF per drawing sheet and names each file in that pattern, in your browser.

Naming pattern

Template

{sheetNumber}

Example

A-01.pdf

  • A drawing set with 10 sheets is uploaded as 10 separate files — one file per drawing sheet.
  • The filename is the discipline designator plus the individual drawing sheet number: A-01.pdf, FA-03.pdf, CS-04.pdf.
  • Filenames must be all uppercase letters.
  • No spaces in file names.
  • Dashes are acceptable. File names must not contain special characters such as asterisks, parentheses, periods or question marks.
  • The drawing upload must begin with an index page: A-0.pdf for Building, Fire, Planning & Zoning sets, C-0.pdf for Public Works right-of-way sets.
  • Discipline designators include A architectural, C civil, CG civil-gas, CS civil-site work, CTPL telecom/power/lighting, CWS water/sewer, D demolition, E electrical, FA fire alarms, FP fire protection, FS fire sprinklers, G general, IR irrigation, L landscape, LS life safety, M mechanical, MF mechanical fuel pipe, OD other disciplines, P plumbing, R resources, S structural, T telecommunications, V survey, X contractor/shop drawings.
  • Multiple buildings: add a number for the building, e.g. A-01-3.pdf is the first architectural drawing for building 3.
  • Revisions: resubmit the corrected drawing sheet under the originally uploaded PDF file name.
  • Inserting a sheet between two existing ones uses letters: between A-1.pdf and A-2.pdf the new page is A-1A.pdf, then A-1B.pdf.
  • Drawings: PDF only, not encrypted or password protected, landscape orientation only — portrait is not accepted. Maximum 1 GB per file.
  • Documents such as calculations and applications are separate from drawings, may be multi-page, and start with a DOC-0.pdf index page.

How to name drawing files for Miami ePlan / ProjectDox

  1. Split the set so each drawing sheet is its own PDF — a 10-sheet set becomes 10 files.
  2. Name each file with the discipline designator and the individual drawing sheet number, all uppercase, no spaces: A-01.pdf, FA-03.pdf, CS-04.pdf.
  3. Start the upload with the index drawing: A-0.pdf for Building, Fire, Planning & Zoning sets, or C-0.pdf for Public Works right-of-way sets.
  4. With multiple buildings, add the building number to the end: A-01-3.pdf is the first architectural drawing for building 3.
  5. To insert a sheet between A-1 and A-2, use A-1A, then A-1B for a second insertion.
  6. On a revision, resubmit the corrected sheet under the original filename.
  7. Export drawings as unencrypted, landscape PDFs and leave the upper-right stamp area blank at the size the City publishes for your sheet size.

Permit Prep does the splitting and the filename pattern. You still confirm the items under "Check these yourself" — those are not things software can verify for you.

What applies where

  • Scope: City of Miami permits reviewed in ePlan / ProjectDox. Miami-Dade County and other municipalities in the county publish their own standards.
  • Stage: Drawing upload into ePlan Review's ProjectDox, after the permit application is filed and upfront fees are paid. Improperly named files may be returned at Prescreen.
  • Upload portal: ePlan Review / ProjectDox

Check these yourself

  • Leave the upper-right corner of every plan sheet blank for the City's batch stamp: 2"x2" on 8.5"x11", 3"x3" on 11"x17", and 4.5"x4.5" on 24"x36", 30"x42" and 36"x48". Permit Prep never crops, resizes, moves or covers drawing content to create that space.
  • Drawings must contain a scale. Permit Prep does not add, change or verify a drawing scale.
  • Confirm the correct discipline designator for each sheet — the City's list governs, and Permit Prep cannot tell an FA sheet from an FP sheet for you.
  • Confirm your index sheet is named A-0 or C-0 for the right permit type.
  • Permitted plans used as the job-site copy must be printed at the size originally submitted.

What the source does not say

  • The City's list of prohibited characters is given by example ("such as asterisks, parenthesis, periods, question marks"), not as a closed list. Permit Prep strips those plus anything unsafe for a filesystem and keeps letters, digits and dashes.
  • The published documents do not state a maximum filename length.
