Drawing file naming for King County, Washington
King County Department of Local Services, Permitting Division publishes filename rules for plans uploaded to Avolve ProjectDox (application first filed on MyBuildingPermit.com). Permit Prep splits your combined plan set into one PDF per drawing sheet and names each file in that pattern, in your browser.
Naming pattern
Template
{record} {sheetNumber} {sheetTitle}
Example
DWEL24-9999 A1.01 First Floor Plan.pdf
- Drawings must be uploaded as single-sheet PDF files — one PDF per plan sheet.
- Drawing filenames follow King-County-Record-Number_Sheet#_Plan-Type, e.g. "DWEL24-9999 A1.01 First Floor Plan".
- Filenames must not contain date or time stamps, so ProjectDox can version resubmittals of the same sheet.
- Resubmitted sheets keep the exact same filename — ProjectDox versions them automatically.
- PDF only. Discipline codes: A architectural, S structural, P/M plumbing, E electrical, M mechanical, L landscape, C civil, LS life safety, V survey, FP fire protection, SC smoke control.
What applies where
- Scope: Applies to permits processed by King County's Permitting Division — generally unincorporated King County. Cities inside the county (Seattle, Bellevue, Kent and others) run their own permit systems and different rules.
- Stage: Plan upload after your application is accepted for screening. Initial submittal and resubmittals both use the same filenames.
- Upload portal: Avolve ProjectDox (application first filed on MyBuildingPermit.com)
Check these yourself
- Each sheet must leave a 3" x 3" clear space in the lower-right corner for the King County approval stamp. Permit Prep flags sheets for you to check and never scales or crops a drawing to create that space.
- Reports, calculations, and forms are separate documents with their own naming (e.g. "DWEL24-9999 Affidavit") — they are not drawing sheets.
- Confirm signing and stamping requirements before you upload.
What the source does not say
- King County's pages do not state a maximum filename length or a list of forbidden characters. Permit Prep applies its own conservative filename safety rules instead of a published limit.
